We finally know what the “Visual Content Expansion” is that Nintendo teased at their Corporate Management Policy Briefing back in September 2020, a time when The Super Mario Bros. Movie had merely been announced with an expected release date of 2022. Ultimately we wouldn’t get the first teaser trailer for that animated movie until October 2022 and it released in the Spring of 2023 (where it would go on to make more than $1.3 billion USD). In those pre-teaser trailer days, Nintendo made it clear the Mario movie was just the beginning, as they expanded into theme parks (Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios across the world) and other visual content:

Fast forward to November 2023 and, thanks to a post from the official Nintendo X.com account, fans were floored to find out a new Legend of Zelda movie was in the works. Nintendo is joining forces with Sony to produce this live-action adaptation of the iconic video game series. The project boasts an impressive team: Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo and Avi Arad of Arad Productions, a key figure in the success of Marvel Studios, are on board as producers. Directing the film is Wes Ball, known for his work on “The Maze Runner,” while the scriptwriting responsibilities have been entrusted to Derek Connolly of “Jurassic World” fame.
The film’s development is still in its early stages, but its confirmation has sparked a wave of excitement among fans and industry observers alike. With Nintendo covering over half of the production costs and Sony handling the theatrical distribution, this collaboration between two gaming giants is poised to be a significant milestone in the evolution of video game adaptations.
Given that the Mario movie was officially announced in January of 2018 (rumors had been swirling for years prior to that) and the first teaser wasn’t revealed until October 2022… I guess we’ll get our first glance at what Princess, Link, and Ganon look like on the big screen sometime in 2028?
